ENONKISHU IMPACT 2020

NARETOI AND CONSERVATION

CONSERVATION

Innovative, community lead and progressive

Since 2013, the Naretoi estate, once intensively farmed, has been devoted to a pioneering rewilding project. Using grazing animals as the drivers of habitat creation, and with the restoration of dynamic, natural water courses, the project has seen extraordinary increases in wildlife.

Naretoi helps to support the Enonkishu Conservancy which is responsible for successful protection of the surrounding landscapes, making a tangible difference in the lives of the people living and working in and around Naretoi.

INVESTING IN THE PLANET

Naretoi is a partner of the Enonkishu Conservancy, an innovative conservation initiative that is committed to sustainable rangeland management that allows space and resources for all people, cattle, and wildlife.

Enonkishu seeks a balance between conservation of the ecosystem and appropriate enterprise for the resident Maasai communities. Enonkishu is adopting a unique approach to conserving land by creating a viable livestock enterprise through a Holistic Management approach.

KEEPING WILDLIFE HABITATS WILD THROUGH NARETOI

Naretoi offers the opportunity to live with the wildlife, learn about the environment they inhabit, and gain the opportunity to protect it.  All homeowners at Naretoi pay an annual contribution to the Enonkishu Conservancy.

Biodiversity is being restored, wildlife habitats are again flourishing, and the wildlife is thriving.  The Enonkishu Conservancy, once a barren piece of over grazed land outside of the Naretoi Estate, is managed under a holistic grazing plan, where the community cattle, clustered into one herd, graze it in sections and leave the grass adequate time to recover before it is grazed again.
